Casey and Todd | Portland Engagement Photographer

Monday, April 8th, 2013

I love all of my wedding couples. I have been very fortunate in this area.

You may not think having someone take your photos is that big of a deal, but there is a serious bond that forms between a couple and their wedding photographer. At least, there is with me and my couples. I suppose I can’t speak for others, especially based on some of the not-so-good photographer stories I’ve heard.

Two things happen to create this bond. First, the couple has absolute trust that their photographer will beautifully document one of the most important and momentous days of their lives. A day when there are no do-overs nor control over your surroundings. That’s some serious trust. Second, the couple has to feel comfortable with their photographer being by their side during every moment of their wedding day, from the time they get ready, to the first kiss, to that private display of love and effection that they think no one sees… except their photographer did. I truly appreciate this bond that forms.

Well, sometimes before the shooting even starts, I’m occasionally lucky enough to feel this cosmic bond with my couples. Sometimes we find that we already know each other via less-than-six-degrees-of-separation. Sometimes, we find through talking, that we grew up in the same area or have a lot in common. And then there are times when a couple is searching around on google for a wedding photographer and they stumble across photos that fit their style, while at the same time they have a friend say “hey, we had our family photos done last year and we totally recommend her”, and – what do you know – the photographer in both cases happens to be me! This is how I came to know Casey and Todd. And as soon as we met, we knew it was meant to be. Here’s another meant to be story: I like to recommend that my couples do their wedding day makeup trials on engagement photo day. That way they can see how well it photographs and they look extra gorgeous for their photos. Well, she asked if I had any recommendations and I only refer someone if they are the best of the best in town. I told her to use Jein King. Why is that a meant to be story? Because she had already booked Jein and was just asking out of curiousity if I had any recommendations. BAM!

Speaking of meant to be… Yep, now its time for me to gush about Casey and Todd. They are one of those couples you just know are a “good fit”. They are both so relaxed and comfortable with each other. Totally at ease. Both genuinely vested in making sure the other is happy. All necessary qualities for a long and lasting marriage.

Casey and Todd brought along their baby, 3-year-old St. Bernard, Nico. I just did a google image search for St. Bernard (to make sure I was spelling it right) and I am convinced he is the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen.

We’ll start with my favorite shots. I wanted something backlit. We walked up to this spot and I completely envisioned what the final shot would look like, and it couldn’t have turned out more perfect.

Meet adorable Nico. He smiles because he’s so darn happy.

Here’s a challenge for you: go to the west waterfront, in a space where everyone goes to see the cherry blossoms, on the warmest most beautiful day of the year so far… oh, and make it a weekend nonetheless… and try to take a photo of a couple enjoying a quiet moment to themselves without a hundred people in the shot. Go on, I dare you. It took a little good timing (I think someone is right behind them but out of the field of view of the camera) and some serious sweet photoshop skills to get rid of all the photobombers (I even got rid of a trash can because it was bugging me), and here’s your final product:

Here’s how we got this shot without a million people in it: Step 1: ask the two dudes sitting on the rock to move so we could take a photo. Step 2: Hold the camera steady and keep shooting as the people in the background slowly walk by, abnoxiously and intentionally trying to photobomb Casey and Todd. Step 3: Make a composite photo without said photobombers ruining the photo. Step 4: Print as huge canvas and hang on wall.

A couple more favorites. The cream wall behind them was reflecting light so beautifully from the large mirrored building behind me, engulfing them in a warm glow. I also love incorporating large orange dumpsters into my wedding and engagement photos. I don’t know why, but I do, and if you’re familiar with my work you know I’m not lying. Oh, and we got some awesome photography tips at this spot from a homeless guy who was rather interesting.

You gotta love Portland.

Casey and Todd – it was a pleasure getting to know you and photograph you. I cannot wait for your wedding this fall!

sunshine at last | Portland Family Photographer

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

We are having the most unbelievable weather. Nothing breathes new life into me as a photographer like a bright blue sky and the warm sun on my back. Year after year, I am swamped through the summer and fall, by December I don’t want to pick up my camera and all I want to do is enjoy the holidays and eat stuffing with gravy and pie and egg nog and Christmas cookies (I will refer to this naughty indulgence again further below) all the time. Then the beginning of the year rolls around. Its cold, dark, and wet. I can’t remember what it feels like to be outside and actually enjoy it. I take photos of my kids with green smoothie all over their face or throwing snow at their dad, but that’s about it. I do a lot of brainstorming and thinking about what photos I want to take if the sun ever comes back to beautiful Portland.

Then… first come the crocus and the irises. Then the daffodils and hyacinth. Then Oh My God there are flowering trees all around me, tulips bursting out of the ground, the birds are everywhere and singing their loudest, the heater no longer kicks on in the early morning and suffocates me with dry air. [cue angels singing] SUNSHINE!!!

For the next seven months, I will wake up every single morning and think about how I live in the best city on the planet and never want to go anywhere else. With every position of the sun and varying cloud pattern, I will be thinking of the various shots I will get. My family and I will spend the majority of our time outside working in the garden, riding bikes, breathing fresh air. And I will absorb as much vitamin D as I can until the next hibernation sets in and I finally give in to buying a seasonal depression artificial light to make it through the month of January.

I celebrated the coming of spring with a quick 20min mini session with this gorgeous family. The mom, Kat, is a fitness and nutrition coach for fat loss. You may have been able to guess that by how gorgeous and fit and healthy they look. Here’s a link to her FB page and its filled with all sorts of awesome information: like her page! I just signed up for her 5 week Eat Clean Program and am now on week two and can honestly say I’m already looking and feeling great and never thought I’d be able to go to bed without craving big ass chocolate brownie. I have to send her my daily food logs and I got her good for April Fool’s yesterday. I’d post my log and her response here but I’ve already written too much and I’m anxious to show you the photos.

Ugh. Gorgeous.

The photo on the left cracks me up. Here’s why: we were photographing near the waterfront and Burnside. If you know the area, you know there are a wide variety of people in those parts. I could not get the little guy to look at my camera, he kept looking to my left. After a few minutes of trying I turned around and right behind me was this really freaky lady pushing the end of her nose up, exposing the lovely inside of her nostrils, trying to make him laugh. It was quite comical once she walked away.

Sarah & Peter | Holy Rosary Church | Portland Wedding Photographer

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

I’m going to plagiarize from an article written about the couple in the Catholic Sentinel because I thought it was just too cute. It read:

Getting Engaged in the Digital Age

Peter Wolf cracked the code to Sarah Ross’s heart.

The software developer created a QR code that links to a very special website: One where Wolf asked his girlfriend Sarah Ross to marry him.

The two met at the Young Adult Group at St. Cecilia Church in Beaverton – they are both regular attendees. Wolf grew up in Northeast Portland and Hillsboro. Ross is originally from Washington and today works for a local policy research organization.

On the couple’s 11-month anniversary in August, they strolled along the Southeast Esplanade, where Ross discovered a placard with a giant matrix barcode. Using an app on her smartphone, Ross scanned the code, which took her to this website: sarahrossisawesomesauce.com.

After Ross read the poem on the website Wolf created, he got down on one knee and gave her a yellow diamond engagement ring.

“It was perfect,” Ross said.

The two married Feb. 9 at Holy Rosary Church among family and friends, who all agree the proposal was adorable.

“He’s so creative,” Ross said. “I was just so happy to get to spend the life with that kind of amazing man.”

I love how telling a couple’s engagement story can be about the couple themselves. Sarah & Peter’s story gives you a look into their personalities, their faith, their sense of humor, and their adoration toward each other.

You can see their engagement photos here if you haven’t seen them yet.

Sarah & Peter’s wedding took place on a cold, but dry, February morning. The ceremony was at the Holy Rosary Church in Portland and the reception followed at a hotel a couple blocks away. I always enjoy getting to know a couple even more just by observing their interactions with their family and friends. This couple is certainly surrounded by love in all directions.

This was my favorite photo of the couple. I adore how a little gust of wind lifted one of the many ruffles on her dress.

Wall Display Idea and a FREE Photoshop template download | Portland Custom Photographer

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

I actually don’t think of myself as a very creative person, but every so often I come up with an idea that I’m pretty proud of. Now, multiply the occurrence of said creative idea by approximately 12% and that is how often said idea actually starts the implementation process. Now cut that number by a third and that is approximately how frequently my creative ideas get not only implemented, but completed.

I’m proud to say that I had an idea, and although it won’t be completed for another 14 years, I’ve made enough progress to share it with you. I’m so pleased with this idea that I not only want to share it with you, but I want to help you out by giving you a photoshop download should you feel inclined to take on a project like this.

Did I come up with a title for this idea? No. My creativity ended once I got everything up on my walls and I can’t come up with any clever ideas. I’m all ears if you can come up with something better than “Watch My Kids Grow As You Walk Down My Hallway”.

Let me explain with photos (of course).

I made this template. Pretty basic and not hard for any of my photographer friends, however if you are new to photoshop I have saved you the pain of getting all the squares sized and spaced perfectly. The download link will be at the end of the blog post, so read on.

Here’s the idea: I fill out this template for every year each of my kid’s life. Say your kid was born in July 2009. Well, for the first template, put a photo from July 2009 in the box that says month 1, a photo from August 2009 in month 2 and so on. Then, put a photo from their first birthday in the center box.
portland custom photographer

Total monetary investment in this project:
36 frames (18 for each kid) at $6 each – $216
10×10 prints (26 total) at $4 each – $144
27 wooden numbers (1-18), $2.5 each – $68
black paint – $3
child labor (see below) – Free

Grand Total – $431

What I would have spent on this amount of wall real estate with canvas and/or metal prints and/or custom framing – $931

Cost savings: $500 (at least that’s the spin I put on it when the husband saw me walk in with 36 frames)

Keep in mind this would have cost quite a bit more had I not waited for the $10 frames I wanted to go on sale for 40% off at Michaels or had I not bought the wood numbers with my 30% off coupon at JoAnns. I bought everything all at once because I want it all to match when the project is finally complete.
My oldest is 6 and my youngest is 4. Every year that they turn older, they get another collage up on the wall. Here’s what it looks like from one perspective:

Years 1-4:

And 5-6:
portland custom photographer

Here’s the child labor part I referenced above. And no, in case you were wondering, the short bangs were not intentional.
portland custom photographer

There are a few things I want you to know:
portland custom photographer
I didn’t get a “nice” camera until my daughter was almost 7 months old. I didn’t know how to properly use it untill she was 3 years old. The photos I took were not properly lit, they were not properly composed, they were not high quality. But they were of her and that means that they were darn right perfect. Your photos of your little ones are too and they deserve to be displayed.

Here’s a bit of a close up so you can see what type of photos I chose to put into the collage. They are all snapshots and I can remember the time and place I took each and every one of them. That was what was important to me. To remember. My kids love remembering too. They have spent a great deal of time staring at these collages talking about when various photos were taken.
portland custom photographer

I did this project so people could walk down my hallway and watch my kids grow. You can literally see how much they change month to month, year to year. Also, because of how I have them displayed, you can see what both of my kids look like at the same exact age during any point in their lives.
portland custom photographer

And one last view of how they look in my hallway. There’s more room behind me and to camera left and I think I can squeeze in all 18 years. If not, we’ll just have to get a bigger house. I didn’t factor that into the project cost however.
portland custom photographer

I hope you like my idea. If you want to share – please do. Photos deserve to be displayed for people to see, not hidden on a hard drive. If you download the template, like the idea, or any part of this post motivated you to hang more photos of your little ones, please leave me a comment to let me know. Thanks!!!

Alina and Brett | Portland Engagement Photographer

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

The first time I met Alina in person, I walked in the starbucks, took a look around for her, and immediately got star struck because I thought Kyra Sedgwick was sitting by the window. After I realized she was really Alina, I thought “wow, she really looks like Kyra Sedgwick”. I’m pretty sure I was half way through season 5 of The Closer when we met. Anyway, I’m not sure you can see the resemblance in the photos, but I thought they were pretty similar.

On with my rambling…

We had a pretty awesome engagement session. Brett and Alina are so comfortable with each other and its so obvious from the photos how much they make each other laugh. We covered a lot of territory for the photos – we started in the Pearl, went over to Burnside (and the line to VooDoo was wrapped around the corner), and ended up at The Nines.

On a side note… I realized its been a long while since I’ve posted anything in black & white. I have an internal war with myself trying to figure out which photos look best in color and which look best in black & white. I’ve been avoiding said frustration and just posting color, but I gathered up enough courage and energy to fight with myself and agonize over which photos to post in b&w. Enjoy. :)

Aren’t they cute?

Diana and Dennis. What a fun couple. Why, you ask? Allow me to show you a photo they requested I take:
portland wedding and engagement photographer

As you may know, I have some pretty sweet photoshop skills. Let me assure you – there were no photoshop tricks with this shot. And yes, that is a look of pure fear on Diana’s face.

You see, when we started the session, we had the following conversation:
Dennis: “hey – can we take a shot where I’m jumping through the air and it looks like I’m going to kick Diana in the head?”
Me: “ummmm. Okay?”
Dennis: “it’ll be funny”
Me: “ummmm. Okay? Whatever you’d like.”

Turns out, we had a lot of fun shooting it and I LOVED how it turned out. It was kind of freaky how high up in the air Dennis got with his jump and how, when his foot got close to Diana’s head, he seemed to stop mid-air. I may have to push back a bit, though, if they request the same shot on wedding day. We’ll play that one by ear.

They are such a sweet couple though. So comfortable with each other with an abundance of giggles.

Happy Holidays and a Look Back at 2012 | Portland Custom Photographer

Crickets.

Do you hear them?

I do.

I can’t figure out if its because this is the first time I’ve updated my blog in two months… or if its because its 4:30am on New Year’s morning and I’m pretty sure I’m the only person awake… on the entire west coast.

Actually, I don’t hear crickets. Probably because its beyond freezing outside. Ah, it feels good to be back to my old rambling self. Dearest blog, how I’ve missed you.

Wait – you’re still wondering why I’m up at 4:30am on New Year’s morning? I will tell you. Its because my husband and I are both 90-year-olds trapped in 40 and not-quite-yet-40-year-old bodies. We go to bed on or before 9pm almost every night. I bet you my grandma, who just turned 90, stayed up later than we did last night. Sad, but true. If you know me, you know I adore my kids (even though it might not appear so when they’re driving me bonkers and I’m close to falling off the edge of insanity), I love food (no further explanation needed here), and I actually love waking up and enjoying “me” time before the kids are up.
Okay, now I’m really rambling. The reason for this long overdue blog post is to let you all know that I am still alive even though my blog updates have died. By the end of October, I pretty much got overwhelmed and needed to realign my priorities and get my head back on straight. I tend to bite off more than I can chew and have luckily been able to identify when I needed a break before I actually broke. I couldn’t understand why I was feeling so overwhelmed until I started compiling photos for my end of year post and then it hit me – I took a hell of a lot of photos last year. Below is just a teeny weeny sample.

Okay, enough talk. I’ll start by sharing this year’s holiday card. This was our third year of putting an awkward family photo on the front and a good photo on the inside (I do a 5×7 folded card).

Here’s the front:
portland family, senior & wedding photographer
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Unibrows are the new sexy and you’re totally jealous of my ability to grow one continuous fuzzy thick one. I was born of a specific heritage and breed that allows my once unattractive follicle growth to grow seamlessly above the bridge of my nose. A lot of people think I photoshop’d my daughter’s bangs. I wish that were the case. A couple weeks before I took these gorgeous head shots, she cut a two inch wide section down to her scalp because they were “in her face”. Of course we had to even them out. The result – eyes that won’t have bangs in them for 3-4 months (may have been quicker, but my kids inherited my huge significant forehead. Any my husband… I have no explanation.

And here’s the inside of the card:
portland family, senior & wedding photographer

If you’re new to my blog and haven’t seen the previous year’s cards, or if you just want to laugh at me all over again, here are 2011′s and 2010′s cards.
2011: Here’s the front (it was a horizontal 5×7 folded card). What you see here is a super awesome photoshop effect called selective coloring. You have to have mad skills to do it. Especially when you color back in things like lips and eyes and super saturated denim.
portland family, senior & wedding photographer

and the good one, which hangs as a framed 20×24″ in the center of my living room frame wall:
portland family, senior & wedding photographer

2010: Here’s the back and the front (it was a vertical 5×7 folded card).
portland family, senior & wedding photographer

and the inside spread (this one is a 24×36 canvas in our hall):

To all of my clients from this past year – thank you so much for trusting me to capture such precious moments. I have loved every smile, every laugh, every cry. I look forward to seeing your families grow.

Happy New Year!!!

Amber and Arlo | Donnor Lake, Truckee CA | Portland Wedding Photographer

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

On a gorgeous day in the middle of September on Donnor Lake in Truckee, California, I had the honor and privledge of photographing one of my closest friend’s wedding. Since I got into photography a few years back, I’ve been telling Amber that my wedding gift to her would be to photograph her wedding. All she needed to do was get engaged.  She took me up on my offer, and what a perfect and lovely wedding it was. She told me she wanted to be a guest first, and a photographer second. As well as she knows me, I don’t think she completely understood the depths of my control issues when it comes to my camera. I struggled to find my personal balance between guest and photographer… I hope I did it justice. When it comes to brides, there has never been one as laid back and easy going as Amber. She was just happy being surrounded by the people she loves, and ecstatic to marry her soul mate. I won’t write too much here because I plan on writing a short novel below about how much I love Amber. For now, I’ll let the photos and the truly happy expressions on everyone’s faces to the talking.

You ever see a couple where you just know they were put on this earth to share their lives together? Yep. That is Amber and Arlo.

The ceremony was on the edge of the lake. Their love of the outdoors was evident in every aspect of their wedding. The ring bearers, Amber’s nephews, carried snow skis with the rings tied to the bindings.

One of the many unique aspects of their wedding were all of the personal touches. Everyone who grew up with us knows that Amber’s dad, George, is an extremely talented woodworker (that’s an understatement). George made all the wood signs at the wedding. He also made the cake topper and all of the wedding favors. I’m thinking he needs to open up an etsy shop and start catering to the wedding crowd! Here you can see the post he made with all of the locations people travelled from for the wedding. Amber and Arlo had a relatively small wedding, and look how many people travelled from far and wide! A true sign of how much they are loved.

I love how the fact that Amber and Arlo are environmentally friendly even shines through in their wedding details.

Allow me to introduce to you… the ski shot. What’s a ski shot you ask? Well, you take a ski, you secure three shot glasses to the top of the ski, you fill each shot glass with your choice of hard liquour, then you get three people on their way to drunk at the same time.

And now, let me explain why I love Amber so much.

We grew up in a small town and most of us who went to kindergarten together are still. As adolescance goes, my circle of friends varied from year to year depending on who was in my class. Fifth grade was one of my favorite years growing up. I got to have Miss Thoreson for my teacher – she happened to have been my third grade teacher as well – and she was arguably the best elementary school teacher EVER, we were the whomplah champions (is that what it was called), and that’s when my friendship with Amber really blossomed. We were really close in high school too. I have so many stories that I would never dare repeat in print, but nothing but good memories with my dear friend Amber. Anyone who knows Amber will attest to how kind and genuine she is. She is one of the few people on earth who I feel 100% comfortable around. I have always been able to be myself around Amber. I never have to hold back with my potty mouth or trash talking. She’s the kind of friend where we will go what seems like ages without talking or seeing each other because every day life just gets in the way, and then our next conversation will pick up as if no time has passed at all. Amber’s family is so wonderful, its no wonder she turned out the way she did. They are like family to me and I love them dearly.

To Amber: My sister Lisa once described to me that her best friend Jenifer is like a sister, only one that she chose, not one that she was forced to have (you know my family and I’m sure you will find that amusing). Well, you are my chosen sister. I love you dearly. We will always be good friends, and when we’re old and senile, we can be new friends again.

To Amber, Arlo, Trevor and baby: Congratulations on becoming a family. May every year together be better than the last. I look forward to many future visits and watching our families grow. And… I can’t wait to see your baby ski before his first birthday.

Sarah and Peter are just too cute together. Little looks and soft touches give them both constant smiles. We took their engagements downtown on the east side of the river. The area is special to them because it’s the same place that Peter popped the question. I’m looking forward to their February wedding and I’m already starting to cross my fingers that we’ll get that one gorgeous blue sky sunny day.

My Baby Niece | Portland Family Photographer

Monday, October 8th, 2012

This summer, I got to experience a joy that I haven’t felt since becoming a mom. I got to meet my new baby niece. I have nephews whom I love dearly, but I wasn’t already a mom when they were born, so as adorable and precious as they were, I didn’t have those maternal juices flowing that made me want to hold them night and day. They second they made a noise indicated they were either unhappy or were sitting in a soiled diaper, back to mom they went. Since I’ve become a mom, I’ve had many nieces and nephews born on my husband’s side. I love them all dearly as well. But it wasn’t until this little lady was born did I get to experience (almost) the same joy, the same immediate connection, the same kind of love that I felt when my babies were born. This perfect little baby was perfect, and she is my blood. If I could have, I would have taken her home with me. If I didn’t have two precious babies waiting at home for me, my four day trip would have turned into a four month trip.

I was grateful for the opportunity to be able to meet my new niece and spend time with my sister and her husband, both first time parents. I am, of course, the best mother on the planet, and I was able to share my insurmountable advice with them. I’d like to think that in addition to a few photos, they were able to enjoy a few home cooked meals and invaluable words of wisdom as a result of my short stay. Since I left, I’ve been begging them to come visit me. I want that baby!

In lieu of my typical photo format, I decided to share the photos as I designed them for the album that was my gift to them. Starting with the cover…

And I’ll finish with two of my favorite photos. The one on the left was taken in very low light on an iPhone. I took the red eye across the country to see them and didn’t sleep more than 10min straight. The day I got there it was incredibly hot and humid and we walked what seemed like forever to get lots of heavy groceries at Trader Joes. That afternoon, it got completely dark as an awesome NY summertime thunderstorm rolled in. I was loving my niece while watching cable (a luxury I don’t have at home) and didn’t even realize I fell asleep. I have spent MANY hours sleeping with a baby on/near me and I think its one of the best things on earth. The photo on the left equates to perfection to me. The photo on the right I have titled “drunk bear”. Pretty awesome, eh?
