Imagine having three kids under five. Would you be brave enough to attempt family photos? Sure, you’d probably get lucky enough to get some cute individual shots of each kid. But of the entire family? Would you be so daring?
I’ve got two kids in this age group. Add in a baby and I’m not sure if I’d manage to get in a bi-weekly shower.
This family, however, had me take their family photos, and I absolutely LOVE them. With a group like this, meaning a family with young kids, I try to set my expectations low so that I’m thrilled if I end up getting one shot where everyone is either looking in my direction with a happy expression -or- I get a series of shots where everyone is looking in my direction with a happy expression at least once and I can photoshop each person into the photo to make one nice photo. That’s my goal. Just one perfect shot that they can have printed on a large canvas or something and display in their home. Keep in mind, when I say perfect, I am hypercritical of my work, and it has to be not only perfect in terms of eye contact, expression, and emotion, but it has to be technically perfect in terms of crop, focus, exposure, composition, focal length, lighting, etc.
Anyway, to get to the point (it always takes me awhile to get to the point… sorry), this family was a dream to photograph. Each kid was absolutely delightful. Their son, the eldest, is incredibly sweet and the best listener. I love this age. This is the age where a child is about to enter kindergarten and is so willing to follow direction (I know, because my daughter is this age and every so often I see this quality shine). Their middle daughter has such spunk and personality. I was able to get such a wide range of adorable expressions. Their baby was a dream to photograph. Babies can be tricky to photograph because they aren’t of the age yet where they accept bribes, but this little babe was full of smiles (almost) then entire time.

I snapped this last one when we were pretty much all done and these two had already run off to play together. Very sweet.
